Kim Jong-un, North Korean dictator, in his primary New Year speech, urged a conclusion to decades of hostilities with South Korea and demanded radical economic renewal in the secretive North. He urged the North Koreans to demonstrate the same character and resolve, which were displayed while the North Koreans conquered space, referring to December’s successful but contentious North Korean rocket launch.
Conventionally, any New Year’s messages from the North Korean government are published in an editorial in the three main state-owned newspapers. The last New Year speech by a North Korean leader was nearly 20 years ago, when the North’s founding President, Kim Il-sung, delivered a speech.
Kim Jong-un’s New Year speech has been interpreted by analysts as an attempt by him to differentiate his leadership style from that of his Late father, Kim Jong-il, who passed away in December 2011.
Kim Jong-un’s New Year message, broadcast on State TV, made a connection between scientific advancement and economic reform. No specific initiatives were divulged by Kim, however, to revivify the declining North Korean economy, which has been characterised for decades by rigid communistic State control that has given little space for private entrepreneurship to thrive.
Kim Jong-un remarked in his New Year speech that the industrial revolution in the 21st century is a scientific and technological revolution. Attainment of state-of-the-art technology is a shortcut to the construction of a powerful economy, voiced Kim Jong-un.
Regarding South Korea, Kim Jong-un asserted in his speech that confrontation between fellow countrypersons creates nothing but war. But Kim stressed that the military mightiness of a country shows its national prowess. Only with a potent military, can North Korea become a flourishing nation, speechified Kim Jong-un, calling for the building of more sophisticated hardware.
Kim Jong-un jumpstarted 2013 with his wife at a banquet, which was attended by top military officers, diplomats, rocket scientists and important party workers.
