Can charity organizations offer hope to deprived Afghanistan children?

By Meera Takkar

Afghanistan, a strategically pivotal nation, which has been obliterated by bloodcurdling instability since 1979, has had many victims of this instability, principal among which is the Afghan child community. The Soviet war in Afghanistan, beginning in 1979, which continued through the next nine years, was succeeded by ghastly warlordism in Afghanistan, which spilled bloody fanaticism across the Afghan soil.

Alabama hostage crisis ends as police assault kills kidnapper, hostage safe

February 5, 2013
By Marion Dean

The Alabama hostage crisis has concluded, with the police killing Jimmy Lee Dykes, the hostage taker, who had abducted a boy and held him hostage in a bunker. As per the Associated Press, Ethan, the 5-year-old hostage of Jimmy Lee Dykes, was unharmed during the Alabama hostage rescue operation. The Alabama hostage crisis situation had lasted seven days and had captured the attention of the American population and the media.

In accordance with the BBC, the Alabama hostage standoff ended on Monday afternoon when the local residents in Midland City, Alabama, heard a bang and gunshots. Ethan, the captive at the heart of the Alabama hostage situation, was believed to be in imminent peril due to Jimmy Lee Dykes. Ethan’s birthday is believed to be on February 6.

The Alabama hostage crisis commenced when Jimmy Lee Dykes abducted Ethan from a school bus in Midland City after murdering the driver of the school bus. Dykes carried the boy three miles away to a bunker in the hamlet of Newton, Alabama. There, the Alabama police had been negotiating the abductee’s freedom.

After the Alabama hostage rescue operation, FBI spokesman, Steve Richardson, expressed that negotiations with Jimmy Lee Dykes faltered within the past 24 hours. The abductor was seen holding a gun, which necessitated the Alabama hostage rescue operation. The police raided the bunker on Monday afternoon to liberate the child as the police were worried regarding his safety.

A local law enforcement official has voiced to Reuters that a stun or flash grenade was detonated as part of the Alabama hostage rescue operation. No details were discharged regarding the way Jimmy Lee Dykes died. Alabama State Senator, Harri Anne Smith, has remarked to BBC News that Ethan has been happily reunited with his kith and kin.

The funeral of the murdered school bus driver was organised on Sunday. Jimmy Lee Dykes is a Vietnam War veteran and has been described as an anti-government ‘survivalist’, with a history of violence. It is unclear what he desired during the hostage rescue negotiations. People residing nearby have remarked that he had once threatened to kill kids for entering his property and he patrolled his yard at night with firearms.
